What Do I Do If I Have a Clogged Bathroom Sink?

Modified on Wed, 20 Dec, 2023 at 7:35 PM

A clogged bathroom sink can be a frustrating and inconvenient problem, but with a few basic tools and techniques, it's often possible to clear the clog and get the sink draining properly again.

Step 1: Remove Any Visible Debris

The first step in unclogging a bathroom sink is to remove any visible debris from the drain. To do this, remove the stopper from the sink and use a pair of tweezers or a small plunger to remove any hair, soap scum, or other debris that may be blocking the drain.

Step 2: Try a Plunger

If removing visible debris doesn't unclog the sink, the next step is to try using a plunger. Fill the sink with enough water to cover the plunger, and then place the plunger over the drain and pump it up and down rapidly for several seconds. If this is successful, the water should drain away quickly.

Step 3: Try Baking Soda and Vinegar

If the plunger and drain snake don't work, another option is to use a combination of baking soda and vinegar to break up the clog. Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar, and then cover the drain with a wet cloth to keep the reaction contained. Let the mixture sit for about 30 minutes, and then flush the drain with hot water.

By following the steps outlined in this article, you can effectively troubleshoot and resolve most bathroom sink clogs on your own.
